This was showing her the mangrove forests up the local river that we will kayak up and teach students about local ecology and ecosystems. This is a tidal River affected by ocean tides and common animals seen can be snakes (pythons, cobras, gold-ringed cat), monkey, wild pigs, and pink dolphins.
Our boat driver, Pak H, is from a local village and one of Telunas main boat drivers. He is neighbors with the family I stayed with during my village homestay. Indonesian people are very warm and their hospitality is one of their greatest cultural strengths. They would take in any stranger and treat them as honored guests.
With his job at Telunas, he has been able to more consistently provide for his family and is currently building a new home that is made of brick instead of wood and is built with plumbing and electricity.
